Desktop and web/cloud based erp
What’s the difference between a cloud-based ERP and a desktop-based ERP software?
We at Solhut, design, develop and integrate web-based cloud ERP systems and standalone desktop software for our clients in various industries. Covering manufacturers to traders, we do it and have done it all.
However, in our entire process of development, we have noticed subtle differences between a cloud-based ERP system and a desktop software. While we develop both, it is important to remember that our experience shows that no one-size fits all. As a result, our clients get custom-tailored solutions either in web-based ERP or a desktop software.
But when and how we determine whether an ERP or a desktop software is required to build?
There are a number of factors that help us in understanding client requirements. Here are some of the factors
Cloud-based ERP system does not require any installation or maintenance
The biggest benefit of a cloud-based ERP system is that it does not require any sort of maintenance, installation or system upgrade to run a software. All you need to do is point your browser to the URL, and login with credentials of the hosting company and you are done. All features of the software are built-in and easily accessible within any supported browser, such as Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge.
However, you need to have a reliable and speedy internet connection in order to access the hosted software.

Resource utilization
Cloud-based ERP systems do not take a toll on the client’s system. This is because the hosting company and server takes care of the memory, bandwidth and other vital resources required to ensure smooth operations of their software. It does not require any software installation for periodic updates as the hosting company takes care of that.
We at Solhut provide optimum bandwidth and server resources to ensure that our cloud-based ERP systems run smoothly on our client’s machines. Moreover, we perform periodic maintenance and server updates to ensure that the clients get the best experience whenever possible.
Compatibility with smartphones
Modern ERP systems are compatible, and responsive with Android and iOS. Software development companies like SolHut, ensure that their cloud-based ERP systems work flawlessly when accessed using smartphones. Today is the day and age of smartphones and if we are not adjusting toward this growing trend, we will eventually be losing out in the long run.
Higher costs for desktop software development than web-based
Creating a desktop software, compatible with all versions of Windows, Linux and Mac is not only expensive but also extremely time-consuming. Just think about this for a second. What if you had to host your website on your own server? Ensuring fast internet connection, scalable hard drive and lots of bandwidth, it will become expensive for you. Another economical solution is to simply rent out server space from web hosting companies that do everything for you.
The concept of a cloud-based ERP and software is no different than having a shared disk hosting space on a remote account.
With desktop software, you are responsible for all data security
With a desktop software, you are usually responsible to safeguard your data against thefts such as using a high-end anti-virus program, making regular backups, using proxies, etc. With a cloud-based ERP, the entire responsibility lies on the hosting server.
SolHut develops cloud based software with 2-factor authentication, whereby an SMS is sent to the registered mobile number and a verification code is sent to the registered email address. When both of these are matched by the system, it grants access to the user.
This 2-factor authentication system makes cloud based ERPs far securer than a simple desktop software.
Conclusion
We never meant to say that a cloud-based ERP is better than a desktop system. It all boils down to the individual client requirements and our experience shows that most of the clients either lack the time or aren’t interested in installing a software and maintaining everything on their system.
Since multi-location industries and offices have an integrated system with real-time updates, a cloud-based ERP solution is mostly preferred. This makes it easier for them to make updates, and sync across all connected devices simultaneously.
